LAKE PLACID POLICE DEPARTMENT HISTORY

The Town of Lake Placid is located in Highlands County, Florida about 80 miles South of Orlando. The town has a  population of approaximately 2,300 with over 400 registered businesses inside the town's limits. Within the town's limits are six schools - there are three private schools, a public high school, a public middle school and a public elementary school.  The town is a "hub" for the surrounding greater Lake Placid area which numbers about 25,000, depending on the time of year. The next closest town is Sebring, 10 miles North on US Highway 27.

In 1995 the Town of Lake Placid acquired the current police department building from Highlands County. Up until that point the building housed the county library extension. The philosophy of community policing works best when the police are an integrated part of the community, and the new building's central location gave the department an excellent start at building a department based on community policing concepts.  The police department is located at the corner of Interlake Boulevard and Oak Street in downtown Lake Placid.
